The activities of the institute are in the field of microelectronics and computer engineering. They cover the areas of conception, design and evaluation of architectures and integrated mixed-signal or digital circuits (microchips) as well as methods and tools for computer-aided design (Electronic Design Automation (EDA)).
Application areas are in particular medical electronics, power electronics, driver assistance systems, digital video and audio data processing. This includes, for example, the development of architectures and integrated circuits for image processing and design automation for DSP applications. The main topics in the area of mixed-signal circuits are efficient power supply of electronic systems (so-called power management), control of actuators (for example in drives) and acquisition / processing of sensor signals.
These research activities are carried out and funded by BMBF, DFG, EU and industrial projects.
The topics dealt with are not only reflected in the research and project work, they are also part of a practice-oriented training and education. In addition to established courses such as lectures, exercises and laboratories, the Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems offers new forms of teaching to provide students with both practice-relevant technical knowledge and so-called 'soft skills', which are often neglected in engineering education. For example, teamwork, self-organization and presentation techniques, among others, are trained in the microelectronics project work.
